Tafsir Surat Yasin, AlMaghrib, Notes Part 1: Ayas 1 to 33

This weekend I am taking the AlMaghrib Instuite tafsir course on Surat Yasin and Surat Al Rahman
The course was originally fiqh of dua, but I was really excited when I knew that it would be a tafsir course. The tafsir courses really help alotttt when you read the Quran. You get to read the Surah with full meaning and understanding of its lessons and wisdom alhumdAllah.

I am going to divide the notes into parts because it seems like everytime I take the tafisr courses I don't finish publishing all of my notes.

This will be part 1 which is Surat Yasin ayahs 1 to 36

I missed out on  ayas 2 to 12 of Surat Yasin because I had to leave early,

Notes are in Green text

The main theme of Surat Yasin is to prove that there is indeed a Resurrection
The first 12 verses tells us that there are those who believe and those who disbelieve. In ayahs 13 to 19 Allah gives us an example of a city in which there are those who disbelieve.

Ayat 13 to 19:

36:13

And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it

36:14

When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you."

36:15
They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies."

36:16

They said, "Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you,

36:17

And we are not responsible except for clear notification."

36:18

They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment."

36:19

They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people."

The city referred in aya 13 is most likely the city of Antikya which is currently in Turkey but in that time it was apart of Syria. At the time the population of this city was mostly Jews and Christians.

The ayah mentions "almursloon", these messengers don't have to be Prophet. When Allah refers to Prophets he says "Marsloon". Notice how aya 13 has "al" before rasoul, but in ayah 14 there is no "al" before the word messenger.

Look again in aya 15, there is a laam before marsloon. This laam is to show emphasis. Allah sends this city a messenger, but the people deny him. Allah sends us humans as messengers, because if the messengers were angels people would not be  able to relate to them.

The scholars believe the people that the messenger was sent to are Jews, because in ayah 15 we see that the people describe Allah as AlRahman. Jews are not allowed to mention Allahs names because they believe it is to sacred to mention, but the Jews can mention AlRahman.

The people of the city told the messenger that he brought them bad luck (aya 18).

Ayat 20 to 27

36:20

And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers.

36:21

Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided.

36:22

And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned?

36:23
Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me?
36:24
Indeed, I would then be in manifest error.

36:25

Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me."

36:26

It was said, "Enter Paradise." He said, "I wish my people could know

36:27

O  how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."

In ayah 20 we see that a man comes from the same town (antikya) but from the other side: this indicates that the news of the messengers has already reached the other side of town and this man is most likely a Muslim convert. The word "yassyaa" means he is coming eagerly; this shows us that Allahs help will come from sources you don't expect.

In aya 21 there is mention of wage. The man is telling the people that unlike worshipping a king who receives money and gain, there is no worldly gain for the one who believes and sincerely worships Allah.

Aya 23 shows us a profound dawah technique this man uses. Instead of criticizing the people he is presenting the message to he speaks in a "I" form.

Aya 26 Allah does not tell us but the man was killed. This man is in Jannah and he is still worried about the people who wronged him.

Ayat 28 to 32

36:28
And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so.

36:29

It was not but one shout, and immediately they were extinguished.

36:30
How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.

36:31

Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them will not return?

36:32
And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.

Ayah 29 : how foolish is mankind, mocking the Prophets.

Aya 30 starts with the word "Yahasrtaa" which is the strongest type of remorse and grief.

In aya 31, Allah tells us to look at the generations before them, this teaches us that we should have a knowledge and an understanding of history and civilization.
